This style is a historical German beer brewed with wheat, oats and a whole bunch of honey. Many people don't know about it because it was outlawed in Germany back in 1877 due to the Reinheitsbot German Purity law (stating that beer could only be brewed with barley, hops, yeast and water). Luckily, it was not lost forever.
You will immediately notice the orange blossom honey aroma (California honey) on the nose, which is the strongest flavor and smell in this beer. Even though it's brewed with honey, it isn't as sweet as you would expect since the yeast consumed about 98% of the honey's sugars. The slight sweetness isn't over nor underwhelming and provides a clean, crisp, yet smooth finish.
The Kottbusser will appeal to people who drink the Blonde ale due to its light and biscuity body as well as big beer drinkers for its high ABV. Think of it as a beer/mead hybrid.
What is World Beer Cup ®?
Often referred to as “The Olympics of Beer,” the World Beer Cup recognizes international brewing excellence. This year’s winners were selected by an international panel of 280 beer judges from 37 countries; 9,300 total entries from 2,060 breweries and 50 total countries were evaluated.
The Brewers Association developed the World Beer Cup Competition in 1996 to celebrate the art and science of brewing. For additional information, visit the World Beer Cup website.
